Increasing public safety
On 3 April 2026, at the request of the federal government, the Belgian Defence launched a new operation: Urban Shield. For a period of six months, around thirty soldiers from the Belgian Army are providing support to the Federal Police in Brussels.
Our mission
-
The increase in serious violence in our major cities is placing the security situation and the police services under growing pressure.
Initially, the military will support the Railway Police in Brussels, focusing on the protection of the rail and metro network as well as the stations. At a later stage, this support may be extended to fully integrated police actions.
In the event of incidents, military personnel can take temporary protection and security measures. They will remain on site until sufficient police support is available. The military always operate under the direction and responsibility of the Federal Police and provide support in the execution of its missions.

Background
-
Following the 2015-2016 terrorist attacks in France and Belgium, the Belgian government launched Operation Vigilant Guardian. Military personnel were temporarily deployed to carry out security and guard duties on national territory. At that time as well, they operated in support of and under the direction of the Federal Police. This mission began on 16 January 2015 and continued until August 2021.
Impact today
-
Within a defined area of operations, military personnel reinforce the security and protection of police services. In doing so, they contribute to a safer environment for both the police and the public.
Operation Urban Shield increases general security and supports the Federal Police. This allows them to free up additional resources for other tasks.
