Following a requisition by the Federal Police, Belgian Defence launched operation Green Shield on 23 March 2026. The Belgian Army is deployed to protect Jewish buildings and institutions in large cities. Brussels and Antwerp are the first to be covered with other cities, such as Liège, possibly following later.

Our mission

  • The explosion outside a synagogue on 9 March in Liège, along with similar incidents in neighbouring countries, is evidence of a rise in antisemitic threats.

Belgian Army soldiers combine static guard posts with mobile patrols to secure strategic locations. The number of military personnel and their deployment can be adapted to the changing security situation and operational needs.

The soldiers act in support of the Federal Police, which remains responsible for the operational command.

Background

  • After the 2015-2016 terrorist attacks in France and Belgium, the Belgian government decided to launch operation Vigilant Guardian. Until August 2021, Belgian Defence supported the Federal Police in guarding key locations in Belgium.

Impact today

  • The collaboration between Defence and the Federal Police frees up resources for other operational priorities while ensuring the continued and coordinated protection of vulnerable communities.

The surveillance mission increases public safety during a period of heightened threats. Through this mission, we strengthen the Federal Police, enabling them to free up resources for other tasks.
