D.R. Congo: European Peace Facility
-
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a dozen soldiers are currently working for the European Peace Facility (EPF). With this project, the European Union aims to prevent conflicts, promote and maintain peace, and strengthen international security and stability.
In Kindu, our service members oversee the EPF project until December 2027 at the latest. At camp Lwama, they are responsible for the purchase of individual and collective supplies and engineering equipment for the Congolese 31 Brigade des Unités de Réaction Rapide. They also take care of infrastructure works in the camp.
Benin and bilateral partnerships
-
Our country cooperates bilaterally with several African countries. There, we mainly organise training and education in a joint 3D approach with the Federal Public Service of Foreign Affairs: Diplomacy – Development – Defence.
Our country has had strong diplomatic ties with Benin for more than 25 years, as well as a military partnership. Our service members support the Beninese armed forces and security services in their fight against the terrorist threat from the Sahel. They provide training to the National Gard and courses in mine clearance, civil-military projects, communication, intelligence and logistics. To support the fight against piracy and smuggling in the Gulf of Guinea, our military personnel also regularly provide training to the Beninese Navy.
DAS: protecting embassies and citizens
-
The Belgian embassies in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Burkina-Faso and Niger are permanently reinforced with a team of military security agents: the DAS or ‘détachements d'agents de sécurité’. When the security situation deteriorates, they play a key role in protecting our compatriots and preparing potential evacuation operations.
