The Air Force is an essential pillar of Defense. It watches over our airspace, guarantees national sovereignty, and supports the other armed forces.
In Belgium, we ensure air safety with our fighter aircraft and intervene to save lives with our rescue helicopters. Abroad, our transport aircraft deploy troops and equipment for missions or in the event of a disaster. We rely on highly qualified personnel and advanced weapon systems.

We ensure the security of national and NATO airspace day and night. Ready to intervene within 15 minutes, QRA fighter aircraft provide constant protection of the skies in the event of an incident or threat. Under the BENELUX agreement, the QRA principle is alternately ensured by Belgium and the Netherlands.
Our rescue helicopters, based in Koksijde, monitor the coastline. True guardian angels for people in distress, they intervene in emergencies and support the police and coast guard operations. They also carry out medical evacuations.
The Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) safeguards the integrity of Belgian–Luxembourg airspace. Available 24/7, its operators detect, identify and respond to any aerial movement in case of an incident. Air images are relayed to higher command levels and neighboring radar centers. In the event of an incident, QRA fighter aircraft can be deployed.
Our remotely piloted MQ-9B aircraft carry out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions to gather essential information. Thanks to their advanced sensors, they monitor large areas, detect potential threats and support operational planning. These systems enable us to act with precision, both in Belgium and abroad, while reducing the risks for our crews.
Our A400M transport aircraft and MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport) aircraft of the MMU (Multinational MRTT Unit) are essential for deploying troops and equipment, delivering humanitarian aid and providing in-flight refuelling for engaged forces.
Our fighter, transport and tanker aircraft, as well as our helicopters, support mission deployments and ensure the protection and mobility of troops.
Through our involvement in international operations, we work closely with our partners in NATO, the European Union and the United Nations.
We are always ready to repatriate our citizens in the event of a crisis abroad. Within 24 hours of the first NEO call, the first A400M transport aircraft can take off for the affected area.
Within 72 hours, we can mobilise multiple aircraft to ensure a rapid and safe return of our compatriots. Quick response is essential to guarantee the protection of Belgians worldwide.
In Belgium and abroad, we provide rapid support to victims of disasters and conflicts.
In the event of a major incident on our territory, we ensure the transport of people and equipment, as was the case during the floods in Wallonia and the attacks in Brussels.
Internationally, we contribute to humanitarian operations and deliver emergency aid after natural disasters, notably through B-FAST.
The Air Force is much more than just aircraft and pilots: specialists work: behind the scenes to make every mission possible.
Force Protection units ensure the safety of bases, personnel and aircraft both in Belgium and during operations, while dog handlers provide their expertise in explosive detection and patrols.
Our airfield firefighters respond to incidents or accidents and handle interventions on base to personnel and facilities.
The Meteo Wing provides 24/7 meteorological support to plan and execute operations safely.
Similarly, the Air Traffic Control Centre (ATCC) Skeyes, based in Steenokkerzeel, is responsible for military air traffic.
Our technicians and mechanics ensure the availability of aircraft. The Air Competence Centre trains crews and support personnel.
Together, these experts enable the Air Force to carry out its missions in Belgium and abroad, contributing to international security and stability.
